Fun and Notable Voyagers! Facts, tidbits and musings!
Much thanks to my eagle-eyed contributor, Nadia, and others and myself (heehee) for compiling these little blunders and facts. If you have any interesting and fun tidbits to add, please email me. They could be things you noticed in the scenes, mistakes, gaffes, in-jokes, whatever! Thanks! G.

Randomness!

Voyagers!: An Arrow Pointing East
1. In Back to the Future, Marty McFly travels throughout time using the date November 5th.  Jon-Erik Hexum was born on November 5th.~Totally coincidental.
2. The omni landings sometimes consisted of drops up to 30ft. Jon and Meeno were allowed to perform the 5ft landings, but the rest were left up to stunt people.
3. What is the most asked question on Voyagers?: "Where are we?"
4. Jill Sherman and James Parriott both worked together on 'The incredible Hulk' before joining forces for Voyagers!

Episode findings-
1. Mabel Hubbard's blue dress in the cafe of 'Barriers of Sound' is the same dress worn by the Princess in 'Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley play the palace.'

2. The set used for Jeffrey's dream sequence in the Pilot, is also prison of Akaba, and the training ring of Capua.

3. The Castle set from 'An Arrow Pointing East' and Buffalo Bill' is also the Roman Arena.

4. The inside of Wright's cycle shop is the same set as Edison's lab, Lucky Luciano's speakeasy, and possibly Fagin's and Sikes' hideout.

5. The opening shots of London in both 'The day the rebs took Lincoln' and 'Jack's Back' is footage from Mary Poppins.

6.Actress Karen Dotrice, who played Marian Brownlow (Dickens' fiancee) was indeed little 'Jane Banks' in Mary Poppins.
7. The apartment of Jeffrey's great-grandparents, is also Alexander Graham Bell's Apartment and Lab.

8. The inside of the 'Two Maids from Bristol' is the same as the one of the 'Royal Stoy Tavern' and the 'Cock and Crown.'

9.  The tree-lined surroundings of Rome in 'Cleo and the Babe' are also Sherwood Forest.

10. In the Buffalo Bill episode, In the background of the castle you can see an English and an American flag, and the American is a modern one with 50 stars!

11. Bogg's original boots in the Pilot have zippers on them. (This is only a gaffe if those boots are supposed to be authentic 17th Century!)

12. at the beginning of the Marco Polo episode you can see a shop in the background called "Salob & Sons" - This is most likely a tribute to Second Unit director, Lorin Bennett Salob, much like 'Sherman Jewellers' is a tribute to Jill Sherman.

13. Jeffrey's Nikes must have been standard equipment for time travelers of the 80's, because they are the same ones Marty McFly wears in 'Back to the Future.'!

     Voyagers!: Worlds Apart
14. In Episode 4, 'Agents of Satan' The platform next to prison window (where the "Hear ye, hear ye" judge stands towards the end of the episode.) is the same spot where they capture Spartacus after his first escape attempt, and also where they placed the entrance to the 'Cock and Crown' pub in 'Jack's back.'

15. The church of Salem is not only the same as in the Western town of "Sneak attack", but also has two large windows in the front, at both sides of the door. But when you look at the door from the inside, there are just blank wooden walls where the windows should be.

16. November 13th, 1692, wasn't a Friday, it was a Thursday. (Correction, it was a 'Sunday'
The British Empire was still using the Julian Calendar in those days. It would only have been a Thursday under the Gregorian Calendar, which is what we use now. (Swordznsorcery)

17. In episode 14-Sneak Attack-
there's one scene where a technician is sitting at a radio, and on the wall behind him there's a poster: It says "Make nursing your war job." War job?! What war? They didn't even know yet that the Japanese were going to attack! Talk about advertising early. Duly noted by Swordznsorcery

18. If you look quick in Cleo and the babe, when Bogg and Cleo make a landing in the Horse and Buggy in 20's New York, you can see them (or the stunt people) jumping off the raised platform on the left, a few feet above the carriage.

19. In 'Merry Christmas Bogg' there's a 'Rotunno's Barber Shop' in the street, where Jeff's great-grandparents live. Likely named for Edward Rio Rotunno- Cinematographer for 3 episodes- Created Equal, Bully and Billy and Sneak Attack.
Voyagers!: Created Equal
20. 'WHACK!' THWACK! Ever look closely at the swords in 'Created Equal?' In most scenes, they are obviously made of wood! Even the sound effects during the battle doesn't sound like clanging steel. This is quite possibly a ploy to appease the dreaded censors that criticized the series for being too violent. I suppose these critics never learned their history, and if they did, it was the history of Pleasantville! And in this particular episode alone during the battle scenes, the stunt doubles are very noticeable in every other camera angle. You sometimes wonder why they even needed one at the different scenes you see them in, especially if Jon-Erik can jump 3 feet high above a sword thrust...and I checked, that sword was made of metal!

21. In the episode 'Pursuit' there is a storefront named 'Steinhauer's' a nod to Robert Bennett Steinhauer a producer on the series.

22. The Salt Lake City airport in 'All fall down' is really San Francisco International.

23.In Cleo and the babe, Bogg and Jeff are standing in the dugout after Bogg tells the coach he's a better ball player than Ruth. You can clearly see the omni on his belt clip beneath his vest, however less than a minute later, it's noticeably gone!
24. The many hazards of being a Voyager!: In the opening credits, when you see Bogg look at the omni and say the infamous, though never spoken in the series, "Green light kid, we did it!"- Jon's thumb is healing from a bruise, thanks to Meeno slamming a door on it off camera. ;)
 25. In Cleo and the babe, Bogg is eating the hotdog, and aside from the relish spill, (heehee) you can see the knuckles on his left hand are scraped with a scab.

The following information was researched and compiled from Epi-Log Journal: The Television Journal of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Adventure. Jan-Feb. 1993 Issue #6 Additions with a star are my own. This magazine is out of print, but old copies of various issues can be found Ebay.  Back Issues

Pilot

. Mary Murphy is in fact actress Mary Pickford. Presumably, her estate wouldn't allow producers to use the Pickford name. On the 'Voyagers from the Unknown' made-for-video movie she is called Mary Pickford on the video box.
.*She is also referred to as Mary Pickford in the Voyagers! Junior paperback novel.

.  The Omni is subtly different in this episode than any other. There is a tiny red 'V' at the top of the time-dials. Also, the Omni's globe doesn't move as it does in later episodes. For instance, in this episode, the voyagers are in France-but the Omni's globe shows North America. *Most likely there were 2-3 versions of the omni made throughout the course of the series. It's been noted that James Parriott keeps one on his desk.
. As originally conceived by creator James D. Parriott, the omni was a gold wrist-device with digital controls. Fortunately, someone realized that if the omni were attached to Bogg's wrist it would be difficult, if not impossible, for him to lose it or have it stolen-a factor which became critical to the series. The omni that was eventually used in the show just may be the most elegant looking time machine in all fiction. *The Voyagers Junior novel also uses the gold wrist-watch version.
. Bogg's hair is straight in this episode, and curly in the rest of the series.  Because of this change, the end 'tag' of this episode was redone (with a curly haired Jon) and used in the opening sequence. The line where Bogg says, 'Green Light kid! We did it!" was also used only in the opening sequence-it was never spoken in the pilot.
. Take a good look at the book Jeffrey puts on his bookshelf. He had fallen asleep reading 'Pirates in History', hence his vivid dream with his parents and also a foreshadowing of Bogg's immediate arrival!
. A very early draft of the script for this episode was adapted into a seventy six page novel written by Joe Claro and published by Scholastic Books in 1982.
. The set of Jeffrey's Dream sequence seems to be the same set used later in 'World's Apart' When Bogg is captured along with Lawrence of Arabia and held in the Arabian prison camp.

Cleo and the Babe
Voyagers!: Portraits
.  It is ironic that Lindbergh's landing should cause Bogg & Cleopatra to be separated in N.Y.C.-Since the Voyagers helped the landing come about four episodes later in 'An arrow pointing East.'
. Cleo pawns her jewelery at 'Sherman Jewelers'-named for scriptwriter Jill Sherman.

An Arrow Pointing East

. Take a good look at the Merry Man in Act IV who says, "One more step, your grace, and my next arrow will find your heart!" He is wearing a silver wristwatch-A device that won't be invented for centuries. (Maybe he was a Voyager too?)
. The castle set was used two episodes later in Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley play the Palace. (I thought it looked familiar!)
. *Although the Robin Hood legend is supposedly real, it is the first and last time the Voyagers help along the history of a literary character.

The Trial of Phineas Bogg (Originally titled: The Last Adventure)

. Voyagers! was canceled by NBC and this would have been the final episode-but a massive letter writing campaign led by fans Debbie Sheldon, Margo Coburn, Tracy Graham (Of the Meeno Peluce Fan Club) and another fan, Shelagh Collins brought the show back for the rest of the season. (Wherever you ladies are today, if you see this site, a big thanks to you and your hard efforts to preserve this gem of a show!)
. Jon-Erik Hexum paid to have his own poster designed and sent out over 5,000 copies to various Junior and Senior High Schools across the country in an effort to preserve the show.  He was interviewed in by TV and radio stations in over 28 cities prior to Dec. 3rd 1982. (This effort was successful, allowing the show to run into 1983)
. William McLaughlin (Sam Houston in this ep.) plays explorer Merriwether Lewis in 'Old Hickory and the Pirate'
. The Omni that Drake uses in this episode is notably different from the one he later uses in 'Jack's Back.' It doesn't have an activator button on top (!) and it is a much duller silver. (Click to see the version in 'Trial')
. Drake describes his Omni as "model 3-16-50"-Probably the birth date of scriptwriter Jill Sherman.
. The courtroom set was used four episodes later in 'Destiny's Choice.'

Voyagers Of The Titanic

. This episode used deleted/unused footage from the movies Raise the Titanic! (1980) and Titanic (1953)
. This episode was a reunion of sorts for Jon-Erik Hexum, since he once played Molly Brown's boisterous husband, Johnny in the play, 'The unsinkable Molly Brown.' (Read Article and review!)
. This episode and the Pilot were edited together into a ninety-one minute made-for-video movie called 'Voyager from the unknown.'

.*Actress Fionnula Flanagan portrays Molly Brown, and now has a recurring role as mysterious, 'Eloise Hawking' mother to brilliant and doomed physicist, Daniel Farraday. She is a woman with the key answers to time travel and many secrets of the Island in the mega hit TV series, 'Lost.'
