Voyagers! Stationery

VoyagerG Productions has designed special stationery for you to use when you feel like corresponding with your fellow Voyagers. The art of writing letters has somewhat died out thanks to the advent of emails and live chats, but there is something so special about receiving a handwritten letter from a good friend. VoyagerG is not familiar with designing stationery professionally, so hopefully her mistakes can be overlooked.  She thought it would be fun try it out and come up with a few designs. There will be more to come. Download the full PDF or take a look at the jpeg samples.

Voyagers! Memories
By: Lou Mulford

Nice memories and thoughts from actress Lou Mulford. Ms. Mulford played 'Mabel Hubbard,' the young woman who stole Bogg's heart  in the episode, 'Barriers of Sound.'

First I want to compliment you again on your site and the professional montages and clips you have edited together.  It is very impressive and well done.  I'm sure Jon Erik would have been pleased.  I feel honored to be a part of it all.
I've been asked to share some of my memories and to give updates on my latest work and what I've been up to since my guest-starring role on Voyagers in 1983.  Suffice it to say much has happened in 26 years.
Jon-Erik Hexum and I were both very young at the time I met him and he was at the beginning of his career.  He was extremely professional and concerned about doing his absolute best.  I remember we met prior to filming to discuss the part and our relationship for the show because it was to be the one time his character really fell in love.  I think we went out for a sandwich and played foosball of all things.  He was very sweet and funny.  Quite a likable guy.
We filmed "Barriers of Sound" in one week.   It was one of my favorite parts I ever did in television work.  The writing was excellent and the director, crew, other actors were all lovely to work with.   I adored the part of Mabel and felt great empathy for her.  It was a bit of a challenge playing a deaf girl because I had to say my lines while looking at the other actor's eyes and then move my eyes down to appear to be reading their lips while they were speaking.  In the edits you don't really see that because the reverse shots are on the other actor and not me.  I was also told that Mabel lost her hearing at 6 years old and they wanted me to speak normally.  This is one of the reasons why they chose a non hearing-impaired actress to play the role.  And hopefully they booked me because I was right for it as well! Jon-Erik was always up and positive.  He also had a realistic grasp of the industry and when I met him he was still living in a small apartment and driving an inexpensive car.  I remember saying to him "You're the star of a TV series, why don't you get a condo and treat yourself to a better car?"  He told me you never know what will happen in this business and of course he was right.
We kept in touch for a couple of years and then he moved on to other shows and more work. I believe if he had had the chance he would have been a great film actor and moved on to even bigger things.  The camera LOVED him and he was so committed I know he would have continued to grow as an artist.

One of my favorite acting coaches told me that one thing almost every really great  star has in common is that they are generally nice people.  People you enjoy being around.  Jon-Erik was definitely that kind of person.  It is tragic that he died so young with such promise.
As far as my career went after Voyagers I did a small guest star playing George Clooney's girlfriend on a sit com called ER (the First ER) starring Elliot Gould, Jason Alexander and of course George.  Who knew he would grow up to be such a famous hunk?  That was a fun week working and rehearsing with such an amazing cast and taping a live performance in front of an audience.
I continued to work in commercials and other small parts on soap operas etc, screen testing for leads in series as they came up and trying to get my big break.  I also took a job as a game show model on NBC's Sale of the Century.  It was a steady paycheck and tons of fun.  Not the most challenging for my actress goals, but I was paying the rent and having a ball with my friends on the show.
I worked on "Sale" for five years and in 1985 I met my husband and fell in love.   Although I have continued steady in commercial work appearing in over 100 television commercials/infomercials over the years,  I pretty much traded the film and TV acting for a settled home life and love.  I raised two beautiful daughters who are now in college.  In the 90's I began a drama ministry at the Christian church I attend and headed that up for about 10 years, writing, directing, teaching acting, producing, and performing. It was very fulfilling.
A few years ago I got the professional acting bug again and basically started all over.  In the past three years I've had a few film roles and small co-starring parts on SHARK, LIFE, LEVERAGE, and airing very soon, YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, COUGAR TOWN, AND MAD MEN.
I continue to audition and get out there pursuing my passions and using my gifts.  I had a website built to help promote my career with the industry powers that be and will be delighted to add Ginger's montage tribute of my VOYAGERS! episode to the menu as "Vintage Lou" or something like that.
Thank you again for creating something special and for being supportive of actors and our art.  We love to tell a story and make an impact.  It's why we do what we do.

Before the Official release of the DVD's there were sellers who created their own boxes with converted syndicated versions of the shows.  I give them points for trying, they are very appealing.

Starlog No. 64 November 1982: Fixing the Past
*This article doesn't refer to Bogg and Jeff as Voyagers, rather as part of a dedicated force of 'Time Cops.' They also use the full name of the 'Omni' and call it the 'Omnicron.' The caption under the photo should read 'Hexum and Peluce' not 'Hexum and Jones.'

Cover Art of the U.S DVD release

A minor change in the Opening Credits for the DVD:
Toward the end of the opening credits, there is a part that shows the screen splitting into 4 sections,  showing action
from the show. A green tint covers the screen and the DVD version has a CUT to a close up of the omni's green light as the camera zooms out. This same series of shots, originally showed the green tinted 4 action scenes, FADING to the massive close up of the omnis green light as the camera zooms out. The fade to the omni was more visually pleasing than the abrupt cut.

Screen shots of the Main menu with Bogg and Jeff
(The omni  has various scenes from the episodes as the menu plays the theme music)

IMO-There is way too much contrast on Jon's lips and the image itself compared to Meeno's...it's like two different Photoshop effects were used and it is visually disconcerting. The open faced omni however, is gorgeous.

Scan of Back cover of DVD

If it looks a little worn, heheh, sorry, that's cuz this is a scan of my very used copy! Once again, I'll put in my two cents and say that the blends of the pictures could have been done so much better. It seems Universal did not want to put too much effort into this release, especially considering the lack of any extras or interviews.  There could have been many interviews given with Meeno Peluce, Parriott and some of the other writers and cast members that appeared. And obviously, they could have made a slamming Photo gallery!

TELEVISION ADS

The above advertisement was for the premier of VOYAGERS! It's so sweet to see how the TV Guides of the day used such bombastic visuals to promote their shows. This particular rendering captures the essence of the characters, but is a little off in their drawing of Jon-Erik Hexum. His face is too wide and his thick, shapely brows look like the 1930's pencil lines. Jeffrey Jones is not wearing his trademark stripes (that would be red if this was color). However he did wear the gray jacket and white shirt in the Pilot toward the end.  Phineas Bogg never wore his shirt sleeves buttoned down to the wrist! Found on Photobucket.com

CHILDREN'S BOOK COVER

1982 Novelization for junior readers.

*This story is taken from a very early first draft of the pilot episode. It is out of print, but copies can still be found online in used bookstores and Ebay.*
Crash! A fist smashes through Jeff's thirtieth floor bedroom window-followed by a frightened-looking man dressed in the strangest costume Jeff has ever seen! Jeff can't believe it. It has been an ordinary day, a day like any other, and now he's standing in his room facing this crazy stranger. The stranger turns out to be Bogg, a voyager-a time traveler-speeding through space and time, making sure history follows its proper course. But Bogg is having some trouble. His Omni, the device that guides his travels, is out of whack. And when Bogg falls out of 1982 and into 1450 B.C., he accidentally pulls Jeff along with him-and can't get back to the present. Jeff and Bogg are lost in time!

Below is the cover for the cheesy edited rehash 'Voyagers from the unknown.' It was put together in 1984 and released posthumously after Jon-Erik Hexum's death. It combined the first episode and a much later one called 'Voyagers of the Titanic.' It included horribly inserted 'space' scenes and unnecessary dubbing to Jeffrey's voice. I did like the illustrations in the very beginning showing Bogg graduating and getting his guidebook.  Here is a sample drawing of Bogg. The others can be found on the Art page. This is really only for the TRUE Voyagers! fan.

INTERESTING NOTE-THE OPENING NARRATIVE FOR 'VOYAGERS FROM THE UNKOWN'

"Far out in the cosmos there exists a planet known as Voyager, where the mystery of travel into space and through time has been solved. It is inhabited by a race who call themselves Voyagers. Their purpose is to keep constant surveillance on history. These people have a time machine device, the Omni, which will take them into the past, present or future. As each Voyager graduates he is given an Omni and a guidebook. One such graduate Phineas Bogg, who was assigned as a field worker to operate in certain time zones."
This quote really doesn't make sense since in the first episode Phineas Bogg explains-"We're the people that are plucked out of time and trained to travel through the ages..."  There is surely a planet called Voyager, but I would imagine they decide who they want to become a member of their ranks.
In latter episodes it is revealed that Phineas Bogg was once a pirate, he says so himself in 'Old hickory and the pirate.' It's even obvious by first glance at his outfit.

*The retail price of this VHS from 1982-A whopping $39.95!

TV GUIDE WEST COAST COVER FEATURE:

This cover was for the West Coast Version of TV Guide, I found out after purchasing A TV Guide with the same date and 'Fame' on the cover.  Sadly, the Voyagers! article was not in it.  However, I scanned the Sunday Night listing to go with this cover from my copy. It's one of my favorite episodes, 'World's Apart. (Cover scan donated by Dennis Daugherty)
